Test Code HCGQ Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), Quantitative, Plasma

Methodology

Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay (ECLIA)

Performing Laboratory

Charleston Area Medical Center, Inc.

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a green-top PST (lithium heparin) tube or Gold top SST (serum). Spin down and send 3 mL (pediatric: 2 mL [2 full MICROTAINERS]) of lithium heparin plasma.

Separate serum from clot or cells within 1 hour.

Reference Values

Non-pregnant, premenopausal women generally have hCG concentrations of ≤1 mIU/mL.

A patient with a negative result should be redrawn in 2 days and assayed again, because hCG values in pregnancy double every 48 hours.

The assay is unaffected by icterus (bilirubin <29 mg/dL), hemolysis (hemoglobin <1.5 g/dL), lipemia (intralipid <2,400 mg/dL, and biotin <40 ng/mL (criterion: recovery within ±10% of initial value).

In patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (ie, >5 mg/day), no specimen should be taken until at least 8 hours after the last biotin administration.

For diagnostic purposes, the results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination, and other findings.
