Specimen Requirements

Plasma- Mint Green, Dark Green Lithium Heparin or Serum- SST gold top, red top

Allow SST or red top to completely clot

Spin and physically separate plasma/serum from contact with cells as soon as possible

4 mL of plasma/serum (minimum 2 mL)

 

Draw sample 4 hours after drug ingestion to ensure the plasma/serum concentrations have peaked.  If time of ingestion is unknown, estimate the acetaminophen half-life by collecting 2 or more samples 2-3 hours apart.

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Quantity not sufficient 

Storage and Stability

Plasma/serum should be analyzed immediately

Store and transport samples refrigerated at 2-8° C

Reference Values

10.0-30.0 mcg/mL

Critical Value:  >49.9 mcg/mL
