Specimen Requirements

Dark Green Lithium Heparin tube or Red top tube

Allow red top to completely clot      

4 mL of plasma/serum (minimum 2 mL)

Transport 2-8oC

Sample tube must be kept tightly closed to prevent evaporation of alcohol

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Quantity not sufficient

Storage and Stability

Memorial, General, Teays, Plateau

If not analyzed immediately refrigerate at  2-8oC for up to 3 days

 

Greenbrier

Room Temperature 18-28oC < 2 days
Refrigerated 2-8oC < 2 weeks
Frozen < -18oC 1 month

 

Reference Values

<10 mg/dL = Not detected

 

Critical Value: >350 mg/dL
