Specimen Requirements

Plasma- Lavender Top (EDTA) or Dark Green Lithium Heparin 

The collection tube should be immediately placed on ice.

Centrifuge the sample as soon as possible, separate plasma and store on ice until analysis.

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Quantity not sufficient
  • Hemolyzed 
  • Frozen

Storage and Stability

Heparin Plasma  Must be tested immediately
EDTA Plasma Stable for 3 hours at 2-8C

Frozen samples will not be accepted due to risk of falsely decreased results.

Samples that cannot be transported to the labortory immediately after collection should be collected in EDTA Plasma.
