Specimen Requirements
Bone Marrow Aspirate, Clot and Biopsy
Biopsy: Fix specimen in 10% formalin for 1 to 2 hours and forward promptly.
Clot: Draw >0.5 mL bone marrow in a syringe. Allow to clot for 30 minutes before adding formalin. Fix specimen in 10% formalin for 1 to 2 hours and forward promptly.
Whole Blood EDTA Lavender Top and ACD Yellow Top and Sodium Heparin Green Top
Place >0.5 mL of bone marrow aspirate in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Slides must be made within 4 hours of collection.
Specimen Rejection
- Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
- Specimen not received in lab by noon on Friday
- Specimen collected on Saturday
- Specimen clotted for flow analysis
- Collected in wrong specimen container
Reference Values
The laboratory will provide an interpretive report.
