Important Note

If FISH studies are needed collect a minimum of 2 mL aspirate in sodium heparin tube.

If nex gen sequencing is needed collect 2 mL aspirate in additional EDTA tube. 

If cytogenetic studies are needed, collect 1 mL aspirate in additional sodium heparin tube.

Specimen Requirements

Bone Marrow Aspirate, Clot and Biopsy

Biopsy: Fix specimen in 10% formalin for 1 to 2 hours and forward promptly.

Clot: Draw >0.5 mL bone marrow in a syringe. Allow to clot for 30 minutes before adding formalin. Fix specimen in 10% formalin for 1 to 2 hours and forward promptly.

 

Whole Blood EDTA Lavender Top and ACD Yellow Top and Sodium Heparin Green Top

Place >0.5 mL of bone marrow aspirate in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Slides must be made within 4 hours of collection.

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Specimen not received in lab by noon on Friday
  • Specimen collected on Saturday
  • Specimen clotted for flow analysis
  • Collected in wrong specimen container

Reference Values

The laboratory will provide an interpretive report.
