Specimen Requirements
Specimen must be labeld with 2 patient identifiers including first and last name. Multiple specimens from a single patient must be submitted in separate containers and labeled according to specific sites. Collection time must be noted in HIS or on the specimen container.
Specimen should be placed in 10% Neutralize Buffer Formalin (NBF) and completely covered with 20% more NBF than the volume of specimen. Ensure container lids are tight. Place specimen in a biohazard bag and paper work in the pouch of the bag. Deliver to the laboratory as possible.
Large specimens, such as a limb, are sectioned as soon as possible and the sections are placed in 10% Neutralize Buffer Formalin (NBF). If large specimens are received dry and wrapped with surgical drape, they must be refrigerate until processing can be completed.
Specimen Rejection
- Failure to follow laboratory specimen collection, labeling, transport or storage policies.
Storage and Stability
Specimen must be in 10% NBF at room temperature.
Large specimens may be sent/stored refrigerated.
Deliver to pathology immediately.
Specimens are kept 14 days post diagnosis.
