Test Code C Anaerob Anaerobic Bacteria Culture

Important Note

Includes Gram Stain and Reflex testing ordered as appropiate

Extreme care must be taken to avoid contamination by anaerobic normal flora and overgrowth by coexisting aerobic bacteria.

Performing Laboratory

Memorial Hospital -Microbiology Laboratory 304-388-9353
Greenbrier Valley Laboratory 304-647-6060

Specimen Requirements

1. Submit specimen in an anaerobic transport vial supplied
2. Label vial with patient’s name (first and last), test requested, specimen source, and date and time of collection.
3. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

Body Fluid Aseptically collect 0.5 mL of aspirated fluid
Lower Respiratory Tract Secretions Aseptically collect 0.5 mL of lower respiratory secretion by percutaneous transtracheal aspiration
Sinus Tract/Uterine Cavity/Wound (Deep) Aseptically collect 0.5 mL of specimen by syringe aspiraton using a plastic intravenous type of catheter threaded into the infected site
Swab Specimen Aseptically collect specimen from abcessed cavity, and immediately place in a single anaerobic transport vial
Tissue Aseptically collect tissue by surgical excision
Urine Aseptically collect 0.5 mL of urine by suprapubic needle aspiration of the bladder
