Specimen Requirements

Whole Blood-Green Top (Lithium Heparin) Vacutainer or Heparinized Syringe

Avoid exposure of specimen to atmosphere

Send specimen in an ice water slurry.

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Quantity not sufficient
  • Clotted

Room Temperature 30 minutes
Ice Slurry Up to 2 hours

Non-smokers 1.0-3.0%
