Specimen Requirements
Serum- red top, no gel
Allow red top to completely clot
Spin and physically separate serum from contact with cells as soon as possible
4 mL of serum (minimum 2 mL)

Reference Values
Observed therapuetic ranges for caffeine in neonates has been reported to be 8-20 mcg/mL. Literature indicates that toxicity occurs when the serum level of caffeine exceeds 50 mcg/mL.
Critical Value: > 50.0 mcg/mL
