Specimen Requirements

Body Fluid (Pleural, Peritoneal, Pericardial)- EDTA Lavender Top, Sodium Heparin Green Top Tube or Sterile Specimen Cup

5 mL (minimum 1 mL)

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Quantity not sufficient
  • Clotted specimen
  • Contaiminated

Storage and Stability

Room Temperature 18-24o C 8 hours
Refrigerate 2-8C 24 hours
Frozen Unacceptable

All fluids should be kept at 2-8C for 3 days due to difficulty obtaining specimens.

Reference Values

All fluids are normally clear or pale yellow.

Lymphocytes are the most predominant cell in normal body fluid.
