Patient Preparation

1.Give 50 grams of glucose beverage unless the physician order specifies a meal.

2.Instruct the patient to have nothing to eat, drink or smoke except for sips of water until blood is drawn 1 hour later.

3.Patient should be instructed to return to the lab a few minutes before the hour is up.

Specimen Requirements

Plasma- Mint Green, Dark Green Lithium Heparin or Gray Sodium Fluoride 

Serum- SST gold top, red top

Allow SST or red top to completely clot

Spin and physically separate plasma/serum from contact with cells as soon as possible

4 mL of plasma/serum (minimum 2 mL)

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Quantity not sufficient
  • Hemolyzed
