Specimen Requirements

Plasma- Light Blue Top, Sodium Citrate

Draw 1 full, tube by “clean” venipuncture (no excessive trauma).

Immediately after draw, invert tubes several times to mix blood with additive.

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Quantity not sufficient
  • Hemolyzed
  • Marked lipemia
  • Clotted specimens 

Storage and Stability

Room temperature 4 hours
Frozen < -20oC 2 weeks

Interpretation

Detects unbound antibody only. If antibody is bound due to adminsitration of heparin, it will not be detected.  Heparin induced thrombocytopenia is not diagnosed by this test. Antibodies may be present without the clincial syndrome and the clinical syndrome may be present without detectable antibodies.
