Specimen Requirements

Serum-Plain Red Top

Draw 4 mL of serum (minimum 2 mL).  

Allow sample to clot naturally before centrifugation.  

Centrifuge and remove serum within 8 hours of collection.   

Specimen Rejection

  • Hemolyzed serum
  • Failure to follow laboratory specimen collection, labeling, transport or storage policies.
  • Serum subject to repeat freeze thaw cycles.

Storage and Stability

Room temperature 8 hours
Refrigerate > 8 hours-5 days
Frozen > 5 days

Postive- Detectable amounts of IgG type specific antibody to herpes simplex type 1 virus

 

Interpretation

Antibody response to any antigen will be affected by immune competence of patient.  Immune response to a specific antigen will vary with individual.  Administration of intravenous-immune globulin within previous 30 days will affect serological results.
