Specimen Requirements
Preferred- Whole Blood Fingerstick First Drop Unclotted Blood
Acceptable- Venous Blood Collected in Plastic Syringe with 23 Gauge Needle or Larger, Discard First 4 Drops from Syringe, then use next drop to apply to strip
One drop minimum
Specimen Rejection
- Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
- Quantity not sufficient
- Clotted

Additional Information
Patients on warfarin (coumadin) should be regulated consistently by either plasma (performed in APL) or by finger stick whole blood (POC). Patient’s prothrombin times should be regulated consistently in the same manner.
