Methodology

Oxidation
Useful for evaluating metabolic acidosis, dehydration, diabetic acidosis, and tissue hypoxia.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 2 hours of draw.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Syringe
1. Patient should be at complete rest.
2. Do not leave tourniquet on patient’s arms more than 30 seconds while drawing blood.
3. Patient must be as stasis free as possible.
4. Draw blood in a heparinized syringe, and send 4 mL of heparinized arterial blood on wet ice. Forward promptly.

Note: 1. Indicate arterial blood on request form.

2. Label specimen appropriately (arterial blood).

 

VACUTAINER

1. Patient should be at complete rest.
2. Do not leave tourniquet on patient’s arms more than 30 seconds while drawing blood.

3. Patient must be as stasis free as possible.
4. Draw blood in a green-top (lithium heparin) tube, and send 4 mL of lithium heparin whole blood on wet ice. Forward promptly.

Note: 1. Indicate lithium heparin whole blood on request form.

2. Label specimen appropriately (lithium heparin whole blood).
