Specimen Requirements
Nasal Only
Nasal specimens are used mainly for Staphylococcus aureus carriers.
1. Obtain specimen using a regular, sterile swab.
2. If possible, wet swab with sterile saline.
3. Insert swab about 1 inch into nose, gently rotate against nasal mucosa, and remove.
4. Place swab in transport media (comes with swab).
5. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
Specimen Rejection
- Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
- Quantity not sufficient
- If a non-nasal specimen is submited a culture will be performed instead of the screen.
