Specimen Requirements

Plasma-Light Blue Sodium Citrate

Draw 3-4 full tubes by “clean” venipuncture (no excessive trauma).

Immediately after draw, invert tubes several times to mix blood with additive.

Specimen must be transported to the lab immediately.

Centrifugation of the specimen must be done by the coagulation department.

Specimen Rejection

  • Hemolyzed specimens
  • Marked lipemia
  • Clotted specimens
  • Tubes not filled completely
  • Failure to follow proper labeling, collection, transport and storage policies

Storage and Stability

Room Temperature 18-24o C 4 hours

Interpretation

Patients with platelet count <50,000 /mm3 can result in test limitations
