Specimen Requirements

  • Plastic or glass container or urine cup
  • Entire specimen. Complete ejaculation by masturbation.
  • Protect specimen from extreme heat and cold.
  • Patient should have 2-7 days of sexual abstinence at time of semen collection for accurate results.
  • Transport the specimen to the laboratory right after collection. Specimen must be received in the Automated Procedures Laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.

Specimen Rejection

  • Improperly labeled, collected, stored, and transported
  • Quantity not sufficient
  • Specimen not maintained at body temperature prior to delivering to the lab
  • Lubricants, spermicides and other contaminants are not to be used.

Storage and Stability

Specimen is stable 1 hour at 37o C

Testing must begin immediately once received
