Specimen Requirements

Throat Swab-Sterile Polyester Tipped Swab with Plastic Shaft

Preferred- Polyester Culture Swab

Acceptable-  Liquid Amies Culture Swab

 

Collect throat specimen by holding down the tongue with the depressor and rub the swab on the tonsils or any areas of inflammation with signs of pus or redness. Avoid touching the sides of the mouth with the swab.

Specimen Rejection

  • Specimen Types: Blood, Nasal specimens, nasopharyngeal specimens
  • Swabs Types (For any specimen source): Rayon, Eswabs, or Liquid Stuarts 
  • Failure to follow proper labeling, collection, transport and storage policies
