Specimen Requirements

Serum-Plain Red Top Tube

Draw 4 ml (minimum 2 mL) blood 

Allow sample to clot naturally before centrifugation

Centrifuge and remove serum within 8 hours of collection    

Specimen Rejection

  • Hemolyzed serum
  • Failure to follow laboratory specimen collection, labeling, transport or storage policies.
  • Serum subject to repeat freeze thaw cycles.

Storage and Stability

Room Temperature Up to 8 hours
Refrigerate > 8 hours- 5 days
Freeze if > 5 days

Additional Information

Rarely, antibody formation may not have occurred when sample was collected.  Usually Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections are clinically apparent after multiple infections with the organism and are rarely significant in pre-school children.  Therefore, most individual with illness due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection demonstrate elevated IgM and/or IgG antibodies to the organism.
